John Phoebus Chairs the Judicial Nominating Commission

Attorney John Phoebus of Anthenelli, Phoebus & Hickman, LLC was recently named as the chair of the Judicial Nominating Commission to select a new Wicomico County Circuit Court Judge, following the retirement of Judge W. Newton Jackson III. Seven attorneys in Wicomico County applied for the position and were then interviewed by the JNC.

Attorney Phoebus said that the JNC “is of the belief that we have an incredibly qualified slate of seven applicants and that we will have no difficulty in sending to Gov. Hogan a list of several qualified applicants from whom he can choose the next judge of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County. We expect to announce our nominees on Dec. 16, following our interview with the candidates and meeting.”

After a vote last week, the JNC announced their nominees to be State’s Attorney Matt Maciarello, Attorney Mark A. Tyler, and Attorney Jeffrey E. Badger. Governor Larry Hogan will interview the candidates and make the final selection at a date of his choosing. Whichever applicant is selected will be made a full-fledged judge until elections in 2018. If elected, he will serve a 15-year term.

“The position of judge of the Circuit Court in any county is an extremely important position,“ said Phoebus. “It is an honor to be named a judge.”
